European Commission Challenge Danes on Online Bingo Stance

Online bingo and gaming is becoming an ever more popular pastime for EU and UK residents, the majority of which are female, and strong gains have been made into the Scandinavian market. Because of this facto the European Gaming and Betting Association is urging the European Commission to take the Danish Government to task over their monopolistic policies.

They would like to see the market open to UK and EU online bingo operators because not only with this give the Scandinavian market more choice, but also because these laws do not fit in with the EU’s aims to create free markets within the EU member states.

The European Commission have made it known to the Danish Government that they perceive the “Danish Pools and Lottery act to be incompatible with existing EU rulings, (especially Article 49 of the EC Treaty) and have been awaiting a response from the Danish Government. Opening up the online bingo market to EU and UK operators will also make it more competitive, and this results in lower priced offerings for lovers of online bingo and other gaming activities, whilst promoting game fairness.

It seems that the Dane’s have taken a page from the US book for the supply of online bingo, if they keep taking this protectionist attitude, the entire theory of free trade could be at risk.
